Place the horses at the starting gate. Four horses must be eliminated, or “scratched”, before the start of the race. To do this, the player to the left of the dealer rolls the dice, and the total on the dice is the 1st horse scratched. That horse is moved back to the first line.
To play the Kentucky Derby board game, line up the horses at the starting gate, deal the cards and begin rolling the dice to scratch horses and start building your “pot”. The remaining horses race to the finish line. Hold the winning horse’s card and you win!

Game Rules
Use buttons or other markers. Throw a die to see how many spaces to move. Toss the die to tell who will go first.
The first person who starts takes both dice and rolls them on the table. The object of the game is to get a ‘7’ and ’11’ or doubles of any kind. If you get a ‘7’ an ’11’ or doubles, you tell someone to drink. The person you tell to drink fills the shot glass to the top with their beer.
The dealer deals eight cards, face down, from the deck, placing them in two columns, the “give” column and the “take” column. The dealer then flips each card over in sequence, starting with a “take” card, then proceeding to the “give” card, and then moving to the next position in the column.
How to Play “Up the River, Down the River” Each player is dealt four cards face up in front of them, and one player is the dealer. The dealer then places a card face up in the middle of the table. If any player has a card in front of him that matches the one dealt, he takes one drink of his beer.
If you bet $2 to win on each of those horses in every race you will have bet a total of $10. … You will need to win 2 out of 5 races to show a profit. By being right 40% of the time you can make money betting on 2:1 shots at the racetrack. Of course things don’t always line up that simply in the real world.
A seasoned off-track bettor will look at much more than this but will use it as their starting point.
