Another way to find an approximate weight is to measure around the horse as described and take an additional measurement from the point of the horse’s shoulder to the ‘edge’ of the haunch. With this measurement you can then do a bit of math: girth x girth x body length ÷ 300 = Horse’s weight.
How to Calculate a Horses Weight With a Standard Measuring Tape. Measure with a vinyl measuring tape all the way around the horse from an inch behind the top of the withers and behind the elbows. Measure the horse from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock.
A horse’s height is taken by measuring from the ground up to the highest point on the withers, or the ridge between the horse’s shoulder blades. However, we don’t hear a horse’s height expressed in inches. Around the world, where the metric system is standard, many countries use centimeters.

How do I calculate weight from mass if I know the gravity? Multiply the mass (in kg) by the acceleration due to gravity (in m/s/s). Your answer is in Newtons (N). For example, a 100-kg object on earth (acceleration due to gravity: 9.81 m/s/s) weighs 100 x 9.81 = 981 N.
A “scientific study” has concluded that a horse cannot comfortably carry more than 10 percent of its own weight. … This would mean 80 percent of the people riding horses today are too fat! According to The US Cavalry Manual of Horse Management (1941) a horse should not carry more than 20 percent of its own weight.

15.2 – This is the correct way of writing that a horse is 15 hands, 2 inches tall. (Spoken as “fifteen two,” or “fifteen hands, two inches.”) … This means that a horse is 15 hands, 4 inches tall. Since a hand is equal to four inches, this horse is actually 16 hands tall.
4 inches
If your quarter horse is in the 14 hands high range (14, 14-1, 14-2, and 14-3) you can generally expect your horse to weigh in the 1000-1100 pound range. If your horse is taller than that in the 15 hands range or 16 hands range you can expect your horse to weigh over 1200 pounds.
A 9-hand pony should weigh around 200kg, whereas a 16-hand Draught horse can weigh in excess of 850kg. The purpose of a horse will obviously affect the desired weight as well. For example, a Thoroughbred horse that’s primarily used for racing should weigh about 500kg.
