But you can still visit the memorial, which is located in South Dakota. The Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota has been under construction since 1948. Although it’s open as a site for tourists to visit and it does feature a completed, 87-foot-tall head of Crazy Horse, it’s far from finished.
Not counting the drive to Mt Rushmore, you should allow 1-1.5 hours to visit the memorial. The drives thru Custer State Park (Iron Horse, Wildlife Loop, Needles) can be covered in 2-3 hours, depending on how often you pull off to view the scenery. This should be doable if you have an entire afternoon.
1. Re: Can you see Crazy Horse Memorial from road? Yes, from highway 16 (runs between Hill City and the town of Custer). There was a nice place to pull over on the east side of the road near the entrance.
three to four hours
No pictures! The only photo known to him was that taken by Doctor McGillicuddy who attended the war chief as he lay dying in the jailhouse. Crazy Horse, says Old John, turned to the wall as the picture was being taken and the resulting photo or tintype was worthless,” Feraca wrote.
After Ziolkowski died in 1982 at age 74, his widow Ruth Ziolkowski, took charge of the sculpture, overseeing work on the project as CEO from the 1980s to the 2010s. Ruth Ziolkowski decided to focus on the completion of Crazy Horse’s face first, instead of the horse as her husband had originally planned.
In the 1950s and 1960s, local Lakota Sioux elder Benjamin Black Elk (son of medicine man Black Elk, who had been present at the Battle of the Little Bighorn) was known as the “Fifth Face of Mount Rushmore”, posing for photographs with thousands of tourists daily in his native attire.

Mount Rushmore is worth about 2-3 hours (read the history, take a walk, move on). However, nearby is one of the best parks in the area: Custer State Park. Other good spots are Badlands and Wind Cave national parks, and the Mammoth Site.
Mount Rushmore is very popular, with peak visitation during June, July, and August. The best time to visit, though, is September and October, with April and May as alternatives. Although spring months can be wet and cold, the Hills’ dry weather patterns make fall visits ideal.
Rushmore in May at two different times: Morning and late afternoon. My advice: if you like to take good quality picture, 9am to 12 noon is the best time to take pictures. Believe me, you’ll be happy with your pictures (no dark faces due to shadow), pictures come out brilliant.
Crazy Horse Memorial increased its admission prices effective Oct. 14. This is the first price increase in four years, according to memorial staff. The new prices are $12 per person, $30 per carload with three or more people, and $7 per person for motorcycles, bicycles and walkers.
You may not want to get as close to Mount Rushmore as Cary Grant’s character did in “North by Northwest,” but the National Park Service does get you close enough for a good look — even if you stay indoors to do it. Scaling the national memorial is strictly forbidden, and there are no tours to the summit.
