The Mesoamerican Ballgame, played with a solid rubber ball — weighing at around 10 pounds — and teams of one to four people, makes a regular appearance throughout Pre-Columbian history. Players wore helmets, pads and thick protective yokes around their mid‐section and kept the ball in play by hitting it off their hips.
The origins of the game date back to at least 1000 BCE, but there is evidence that the game may have its roots in the early days of the Olmec Civilization. The only evidence that survives of the Olmec having played this game is a few pieces of artwork and a few statures.
The ancient Maya ballgame called pitz was part of Maya political, religious, and social life. Played with a rubber ball ranging in size from that of a softball to a soccer ball, players would attempt to bounce the ball without using their hands through stone hoops attached to the sides of the ball court.
The primary purpose of the ballgame appears to have been theological, as the game represented different religious aspects important to the people of Mesoamerica, including the cycles of the sun, fertility, and maize.

Tlachtli is kind of like basketball. Games similar to basketball have been played all over Mesoamerica by peoples like the Aztec, the Maya, and the Olmec. The object of Tlachtli is to put a ball through a hoop made of stone at one end of a court. But unlike basketball, the players can’t use their hands.
The game was invented sometime in the Preclassical Period (2500-100 BCE), probably by the Olmec, and became a common Mesoamerican-wide feature of the urban landscape by the Classical Period (300-900 CE). Eventually, the game was even exported to other cultures in North America and the Caribbean.

Painted ceramic vases and carved stone sculptures show kings dressed as gods reenacting these mythological games.

Players would play on teams of two to four. Each team passed the ball back and forth between themselves and members of the opposing team.
