So, there are no bodies buried in Hoover Dam. The question about fatalities is more difficult to answer, because it depends in a large part on who is included as having “died on the project.” For example, some sources cite the number of deaths as 112.
How long did it take to build the dam, powerplant, and appurtenant works? Five years. The contractors were allowed seven years from April 20, 1931, but concrete placement in the dam was completed May 29, 1935, and all features were completed by March 1, 1936.
The main reason for building Hoover Dam was to supply the electrical power necessary to transport 4.4 million acre-feet—over a quarter of the Colorado River’s average annual flow—to California. Soon, the dam also would supply water to Las Vegas, whose revenue would be used to finance more water projects.
Concrete in the core portion of the gigantic Hoover dam in Nevada, USA is still continuing to cure according to engineers. That is in spite of the fact that the dam was built way back in 1935 and a huge network of 1 inch dia.
An unnamed source stated that since 1936 when the dam was completed and open for tours, approximately 100 people had perished by suicide. In 2004, a regional security manager stated that there had been 30 deaths by suicide since the dam was completed. The last reported death occurred in October 2012.
As such, it it susceptible to catastrophic failure if a large enough quake breaks the concrete loose from the canyon on EITHER side. Given the distance to any major faults, it would take a doozy of a quake, though. It would be very, very hard to significantly damage Hoover with a quake of any possible magnitude.
While the dam is expected to last for centuries, engineers predict the structure could last for more than 10,000 years, surpassing most remnants of human civilization if humans were to disappear from the earth.
Three Gorges Dam, China is the world’s largest hydroelectric facility. In 2012, the Three Gorges Dam in China took over the #1 spot of the largest hydroelectric dam (in electricity production), replacing the Itaipú hydroelectric power plant in Brazil and Paraguay.
Engineers estimated that if the entire dam had been poured as a single concrete block, it would have taken 125 years to cool (and it would have collapsed). To circumvent this problem, the concrete was poured into discrete rectangular plots called “lifts.” It was then cooled with pipes filled with ice-cold water.
There were also significant downsides to the project: Over 100 construction workers were killed, and the Dam had a large impact on the Colorado River, flooding wildlife habitats and changing its natural flow of the Colorado. Stevens notes this would not pass today’s environmental impact assessments.
Oroville Dam: Located on California’s Feather River, the Oroville Dam is the tallest dam in the United States at 770 feet. At its base, it extends for three-quarters of a mile.
Damage to the Dam If catastrophe struck the Hoover Dam and it somehow broke, a catastrophic amount of water from Lake Mead would be released. That water would likely cover an area of 10 million acres (4 million hectares) 1 foot (30 centimeters) deep. Approximately 25 million people depend on water from Lake Mead.
Can you still walk and/or drive across Hoover Dam? Yes, you can do both. Then you can drive to the dam and park in the garage for $10. But you can also drive across the dam (security is tight, so there’s no stopping on top), park in the lots on the Arizona side, and walk back across.
Cold Weather Concrete Tips. You can pour in cold weather, as long as certain precautions are taken. Concrete set time at 70 degrees is approximately 5 hours, at 50 degrees it is 10 hours, at 30 degrees it’s up to 20 hours (if the concrete doesn’t freeze!).
As a result, growing demand, relentless shortage, and climate change are creating an average water deficit of almost 1 million acre-feet a year in the Colorado River system. Both Lake Powell and Lake Mead reservoirs are half empty, and scientists predict that they will probably never fill again.
