Horse rugs are sized in feet and inches with 3” increments. To measure your horse for a rug, use a soft tape measure and measure horizontally from the centre of the chest to the end of the rump.
Most saddle pads have two or three measurements. Length, width, and sometimes thickness. The first number on a pad’s measurement is the length of the pad along the horse’s spine. The second is going to be the width of the pad, from one side, across the withers, and down the other side.
A horse’s height is taken by measuring from the ground up to the highest point on the withers, or the ridge between the horse’s shoulder blades. However, we don’t hear a horse’s height expressed in inches. Around the world, where the metric system is standard, many countries use centimeters.

So mature height can be estimated at any time by dividing the present height by the percent mature the colt is by age and multiplying by 100. Additionally, the horse’s leg length is mature at 1 year of age, and the horse will normally be twice as tall as his length of leg.

Stand your horse as square as possible, and measure from the center of chest around side of the body to the point of the horse’s rump just before the tail. If your horse ends up measuring between sizes, always round up to the next size to ensure full coverage.
It’ll extend past the edge of the saddle, all the way around ? but, like a good saddle, it won’t extend past your horse’s last rib. If it’s too long, it’ll likely rub and press against your horse’s hips.
If you and your gear together weigh more than 200 lbs., you should get at least a 7/8″ pad, but a 1″ would be better. What kind of terrain will you be riding on? If you regularly ride over mountainous or hilly areas, again, you want at least a 7/8″ thick pad, but 1″ would be better.
