Loop the rope through itself and tie a tight, common double square knot at the base of the rubber hose at the bottom of the swing set rod. Make sure this knot is extremely tight. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends a minimum of six feet of clearance in every direction of a swing set. This area is called the “safety zone.” Soft spaces and flat ground are the ideal locations for a swing set. Soft ground allows for the balance and stability needed for safe swinging.

Adequate spacing is a critical part of swing structure safety. All swings should be at least two feet apart from each other. The distance between the main support frame and the swings should measure at least 30 inches to prevent entanglement and collision. Two feet should be between the swing set and the ground.
Ensure a minimum of 8 feet of clearance around all parts of a play structure, and at least 10 feet of clearance behind and in front of the swings.
