Unfortunately, burying a horse on your own property is now strictly controlled by law and, in many states, is illegal. The reasons for this primarily stem from concerns over groundwater contamination and odor.
The general cost of horse cremation is anywhere between $250 to $1500. Remember, the price also depends on where you live, as some areas have higher costs than others. If your horse is to be picked up, and it is between working hours and not at a weekend, you probably won’t need to pay an extra charge.
The horse becomes anesthetized (and therefore unconscious) to such a degree that its heart stops beating and death follows. If it is used then the carcass must be disposed of either by burying (see below) or cremation. It cannot be used for human consumption or animal food.
Many jurisdictions require the burial site be no fewer than 100 yards from wells, streams, and other water sources; and in some locales, it is illegal to bury a chemically euthanized horse. Generally, a trench 7-feet wide and 9-feet deep is sufficient, with at least 3-4 feet of dirt covering the animals remains.
Out west, if a horse dies in a pasture, it might be cleaned up by vultures and coyotes within a matter of days. In the east, it is more common to render, compost or bury your animal in a backyard, cemetery or landfill; while some people choose the more expensive (and less green method) of incineration.
Will a horse run until its heart explodes? Horses will run themselves to death if the jokey lets them. A horse can actually race themselves so hard that their heart will explode due to the exertion.

For larger animals, including large dogs and horses, it will take a matter of hours. The average amount of time it takes to cremate an animal is 45 minutes to two hours.
Though we don’t know precisely how long it takes many specific animals to decay, we do have some numbers: A large whale could take up to 16 years to become skeletonized, according to a Nature paper about carrion. Small animals like a pig or a rat take a few days.
The local authority has to agree that the horse is a pet rather than livestock, which can not be buried. … Horse owners must comply with all stipulations made by their local authority regarding the burial site. These are likely to include; 250m away from any well, borehole or spring that supplies water.
Dead and dying horses are often said to be “sent to the glue factory.” Why are horses good for making glue? They have a lot of collagen. … It’s also the key ingredient in most animal glues, as it can be made into a gelatin that’s sticky when wet but hardens when it dries.
Secure the tow rope or drag chain to the front loader or pick-up and slowly drag the carcass from the stall. Once the carcass has been removed from the stall, the carcass may be lifted with the forks of the skid steer or tractor and moved.
