A completely matured horse comes in anywhere between 900 and 2,200 pounds. Draft horses easily tip the scale over 2,000 pounds. It’s no joke, some literally weigh a ton! Light saddle horses are generally between 900 and 1,300 pounds.
A 9-hand pony should weigh around 200kg, whereas a 16-hand Draught horse can weigh in excess of 850kg. The purpose of a horse will obviously affect the desired weight as well. For example, a Thoroughbred horse that’s primarily used for racing should weigh about 500kg.
If your quarter horse is in the 14 hands high range (14, 14-1, 14-2, and 14-3) you can generally expect your horse to weigh in the 1000-1100 pound range. If your horse is taller than that in the 15 hands range or 16 hands range you can expect your horse to weigh over 1200 pounds.

A study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behaviour suggests that the rider should weigh less than 15 percent of their horse’s body weight. For horses ≥15 hh weigh tape 1 was most accurate (103.5 [9.1] per cent) and the formula, tape 2 and the visual estimate were 95.5 (13.1) per cent, 91.8 (9.2) per cent, and 89.3 (22.2) per cent accurate respectively. Overall the formula appeared to be the most accurate estimator of a horse’s weight.
Today, the Clydesdale stands 162 to 183 cm (16.0 to 18.0 h) high and weighs 820 to 910 kg (1800 to 2000 lb). Some mature males are larger, standing taller than 183 cm and weighing up to 1000 kg (2200 lb).
