The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 450 calories from sugar sweetened beverages per week (the amount in three cans of cola).
As usual, the key is moderation. Limit yourself to no more than one or two cans (a maximum of 24 ounces) of soda a day, and make sure they don’t replace more nutritious foods and beverages in your diet.
But just one soda a day isn’t awful…is it? Now if you’re drinking an entire case in a day, that’s certainly the farthest thing from healthy. But new research in the Journal of the American Heart Association, says that just 12 ounces of a sugary drink each day, is linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

Many people choose to drink soft drinks over water. Although drinking an occasional soda does not necessarily cause health risks, consuming one to two sodas a day can eventually pose some health problems.
Healthy Drinks Water is the best choice for quenching your thirst. Some beverages should be limited or consumed in moderation, including fruit juice, milk, and those made with low-calorie sweeteners, like diet drinks. It’s generally best to avoid sugary drinks like soda, sports beverages, and energy drinks.
Belly Bloater No. Even more potent than carbonation is sugar, a rich source of empty calories that does not provide fullness. Soda sparks a spike in blood sugar, followed by an insulin spike and excessive belly fat storage.
“An occasional soda is not going to have a significant impact on your health. It’s when it becomes a regular habit that [it’s] a problem. Look for other non-caloric beverages you enjoy, like iced tea, water, and infused waters.” And here are some more reasons to cut back on all soda (including diet).
“ Carbonated drinks, flat or otherwise, including cola, provide inadequate fluid and electrolyte replacement and cannot be recommended,” they said. Flat soda, a popular remedy for upset stomach, may do more harm than good.
Even that amount — even if it is a diet soda — can hurt your health. An American Diabetes Association study reported that consuming one or more sodas per day compared to none at all increased the risk of metabolic syndrome by 36% and type 2 diabetes by 67%.
All that acid takes its toll on your stomach, as well. Acid from soda can irritate the stomach lining, and cause heartburn and acid reflux.
Diet and regular sodas have both been linked to obesity, kidney damage, and certain cancers. Regular soft drinks have been linked to elevated blood pressure.
Usually, these withdrawal symptoms are due to quitting caffeine, and they typically last anywhere from 2–9 days ( 21 ).
Try a soda alternative Infused sparkling water. Add slices of your favorite fruits into sparkling water for a delicious soda substitute. Sparkling green tea. Kombucha. Water with mint and cucumber. Herbal or fruit teas. Coconut water.
