Friends with a green dot next to their names are on chat or Messenger. These friends can see your chat messages on their phones. Friends with no icon next to their names are off chat. Green dot on Messenger next to any user means that user is currently active on Messenger, In other words he is online right now.
If the user is using Android, then from the chat option they have to click on their profile picture. The profile picture appears in the top left corner. Then the user has to tap on the active status option.
To see who’s active in Messenger: Desktop App: People who have a in the lower right corner of their profile picture are active or recently active on Messenger or Facebook. When your Active Status is turned on, you’ll appear active to your friends and contacts or display a recently active time.
You are able to have both a normal Facebook messenger conversation as well as a Secret Conversation with the same person. A padlock icon is displayed next to the person’s profile picture to tell you if a conversation is ‘ Secret ‘.
How to know if he’s using secret conversations? If a message is sent through Secret Conversations, the message bubble which is usually blue, will be black. It will read ‘Encrypted from one device to the other’ to let both participants know.

Your connections see a green dot on their Facebook Messenger app or Facebook website that indicates you’re available, and you can see which of your connections are available to receive messages in real time by locating the green light next to their names.
When you are using Facebook application, it will show you as “Active” on Messenger too and you won’t be able to see the messages till you install Messenger. However when you are browsing Facebook web, it will show you online and will direct you to messenger when someone messages you.
Messenger shows that you’re online when: you’re using messenger app at that moment (it’s open on your mobile device); you’re online on Facebook website at that moment (you’re logged in and using the website either on the description or mobile – doesn’t matter).
When you see something like “ Active 10 Min Ago ” as their status, that means the person was active 10 minutes ago on Facebook Messenger. If there is no time listed, it means they are using it right now (if it’s showing that they’re active ) or that they’ve been on Facebook in the last, few hours.
How To Turn Off Chat For One Person on Facebook Messenger Click on the Settings or Cog icon at the bottom of your Messenger chat box as shown below. Click on “Turn Off Active Status ” option. Doing so will launch the ” Active Status ” window shown in the image below. In the pop-out window, tick on the circle beside “Turn off active status for only some contacts”
To find the online status of another user on an iPhone or Android you can: Open Facebook Messenger. Check the round profile pictures at the top and swipe to the right to uncover more. Each person who’s currently active on Facebook will have a green dot next to their name.
If your friends aren’t showing up as “online” on Facebook, the first thing that you should check is that your have the chat feature turned on. If the “Chat” button in the lower-right corner of the window reads “Chat (Off)”, then click on it to turn on chat and display your list of online friends.
Open messenger, tap on your profile picture, below there will be “ Active Status” tap that then tap it to turn it off. If it still shows when you were last active, do the same with Facebook app. It may take a bit of time for it to change the settings once you’ve applied them.
