A century is a period of 100 years. So the reason people refer to 18th century when talking about things that took place in the 1700s such as the American Revolution is because the 18th century on a timeline refers to years 1701–1800 AD.
The 18th century lasted from January 1, 1701 to December 31, 1800.
18th and 19th Centuries (1700-1899)
We live in the 21st Century, that is, the 2000s. Similarly when we say ” 20th Century,” we are referring to the 1900s. All this because, according to the calendar we use, the 1st Century included the years 1-100 (there was no year zero), and the 2nd Century, the years 101-200. Similarly, when we say 2nd Century B.C.E.
The 21st ( twenty-first) century is the current century in the Anno Domini era or Common Era, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. It began on January 1, 2001 (MMI), and will end on December 31, 2100 (MMC).

There were two very different lifestyles in 18th – century England: that of the rich and that of the poor. With the Industrial Revolution, which started in the middle of the century, came new machinery that saved time and made some people very wealthy. The rich were getting richer and the poor, poorer.
DAILY LIFE IN COLONIAL AMERICA. At first life was hard and rough in the North American colonies. However by the early 18th century people in the American colonies lived in houses as comfortable as those in Europe. Wealthy people had finely carved furniture, wallpaper, china, silver and crystal and chairs were common.
The 18th century BC was the century which lasted from 1800 BC to 1701 BC.
The Chinese Bronze Age had begun by 1700 B.C. in the kingdom of the Shang dynasty along the banks of the Yellow River in northern China. At times the Shang kings ruled even larger areas. Contrary to common notions about the Chinese, the Bronze Age Chinese did not drink tea or eat rice.
2000 BC Great Stone Palaces At Knossos Built- The stone palaces at Knossus and Malia were built on Crete at around 2000 BC. Great palaces were built at Knossos, Phaistos and Mallia. There was a central government. Minoans began trading with other peoples both around the Aegean and as far away as Egypt.
Europe in the 18th Century. In Europe, the eighteenth century was a period of intellectual, social, and political ferment. Politically, the ideas of John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and others would give rise to a notion of democracy that would ultimately supplant the monarchical power structure on the European continent.
Europe’s population doubled to almost 200 million during the 18th century, and doubled again during the 19th century, thanks to improved living conditions and healthcare.
The 18th century was characterised by numerous major wars, especially with France, with the growth and collapse of the First British Empire, with the origins of the Second British Empire, and with steady economic and social growth at home. The conflict, which France and Spain were to lose, lasted until 1714.
