Mayor Lori Lightfoot has issued a sweeping curfew order on all liquor sales across Chicago, banning sales after 9 p.m. in the city’s latest attempt to curb the coronavirus pandemic that is still growing every day. The new curfew takes effect Thursday night throughout the city.
In most jurisdictions, sales of alcoholic beverages can occur between 7 a.m. and 3 a.m. in retail establishments, and the bar closing time is 2 a.m. Maximum size for beer and malt liquor bottles sold at retail establishments appears to be 32 ounces in most jurisdictions.
Sale is allowed 6 A.M. to 2 A.M. Wine, beer and spirits are allowed to be sold in grocery stores. California has quite lenient laws about liquor promotion but counties can restrict sales with local laws. On-premise sale is allowed from 9 A.M. to 1 A.M. (Monday – Thursday) 9 A.M. to 2 A.M. (Friday – Saturday).
Illinois law prohibits the consumption of alcoholic liquor by any person under 21 years of age, which is a Class A Misdemeanor. Penalty: The person under 21 years of age is subject to a minimum $500.00 fine.
Now, Illinois has stepped up its booze availability. “Shoppers can choose from available beer and wine selections as well as spirits on Walmart’s website, then schedule a time for pickup, just like with other grocery items. A personal shopper will grab the items selected.
With a Late Hour Liquor License, establishments are permitted to remain open until 4 am Monday through Saturday and 5 am on Sunday. The legal opening time for all liquor establishments is 7 am, Monday through Saturday, and 11 am Sunday. Restaurants can begin selling liquor at 10 am on Sunday.

The decision to close the bars at 2am came about as a compromise between market demand and people not wanting bar goers driving home when kids were going to school. The problem for the city and police department was that there were tons of after hour parties.

Is an unopened alcohol bottle banned on public transport? Great point! California has no similar law; you are considered to be 21 years of age at 12:01 on your birthday. In some places you can ‘t buy alcohol at all, ever, while in others you can drink at any age if you’re with a legal guardian.

State Laws Certain states allow bartenders to drink on the job, but the laws can get blurry depending on what state you live in. For example, in states such as California, bartenders ARE allowed to drink while behind the bar. Where as other states outright ban it.
