For the first time since the end of World War II, the Kentucky Derby will not take place on the first Saturday in May. The Derby, the first jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown, became the latest marquee sporting event forced to postpone because of the deepening coronavirus pandemic.
The 146th running of the Kentucky Derby is on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020. Post time is set for approximately 7:01 p.m. ET. The Derby is run on the dirt track at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, where it has been held since its inaugural running in 1875.
Authentic, an 8-1 shot ridden by jockey John Velazquez, won the Kentucky Derby in dramatic fashion, finishing ahead of Tiz The Law to give trainer Bob Baffert his sixth career Derby victory. That ties him for the all-time record at Churchill Downs.
The 145th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place Saturday, May 4 at Churchill Downs, with the Derby itself scheduled to take place at 6:50 p.m. ET.
The 2020 Kentucky Derby will run on a rescheduled date of Saturday, September 5 due to COVID-19 pandemic. Churchill Downs was originally going to hold the 146th Run for the Roses on Saturday, May 2.
The Kentucky Derby has never been postponed or canceled due to bad weather. Churchill Downs consistently reiterates that the event is held rain or shine. In 2018, rain poured all day long and the 144th Kentucky Derby race still went off without a beat.
The average list price for 2020 Kentucky Derby tickets on the secondary market is $1,423. The least expensive ticket to this year’s race is $108 for an infield general admission spot. The most expensive is a listing for $21,925 in the Mansion Club.

The long-established fashion was started by the women, however, over the last few years, many men have taken part in the tradition as well.
The winning horse’s owner takes home 62%, or $1.86 million. The winning jockey, Flavien Prat, gets 10% of that, or $186,000.
