Development for Destiny began at Bungie in 2010 under the code name “Project Tiger”, shortly after the release of Halo: Reach. This coincided with the announcement of a 10-year publishing agreement with Activision Blizzard.
On the opposite end, the actual game mechanics and post-launch support for Destiny 2 are much better than the original game. Taking aside the nostalgia and tone of the original, Destiny 2 has much more content to dive into and has a more consistent update model.
When the original Destiny ended in March 2017, Bungie released a final celebration that gave players reasons to go back and collect everything in the game. Called Age of Triumph, the update revitalized the game, setting it up to have a life beyond any ongoing developer support.
Unfortunately, there are currently no plans for a Destiny 3 release. Game director Luke Smith announced three planned expansions for the game, namely, Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, and Lightfall. Smith says that the company will still be observing the game as the months go by and will adjust updates as fit.

No. Even treated like normal RPG with a story and an endpoint, it’s messy. But it’s far from pointless to play in 2021. Destiny 1 still has an interesting world, fun quests, lots of loot to chase, cool abilities to master, and the franchise’s signature, nearly unbeatable gunplay.
Short answer: get Destiny 1 first, if you already have friends who are willing to play it with you. You could easily pick up Destiny 2, having never played D1, and have no issues with the game whatsoever. In fact, the developers made it so certain things in Destiny 2 change if you never played Destiny 2.

First, the good news: Destiny 2 currently has nearly 220,000 players in-game on Steam, which is its highest concurrent player count since back when it initially launched on Valve’s storefront.
