In general, large dog breeds age more quickly than small dog breeds. Small breeds are considered senior dogs around 10-12 years old. Medium size breeds are considered senior dogs around 8-9 years old. Large and giant breeds are considered senior dogs around 6- 7 years old.

Older dogs can be surprisingly active when it comes to walks. Susan Rosenau’s dogs, a 10 – year – old Boston terrier and a 10 – year – old French bulldog, get four walks daily, two for 20 minutes and two that are shorter. Jenn Stollery’s cavalier King Charles spaniels walk 1 to 4 miles daily.

The aging profile of dogs varies according to their adult size (often determined by their breed): smaller dogs often live over 15–16 years, medium and large size dogs typically 10 to 13 years, and some giant dog breeds such as mastiffs, often only 7 to 8 years.
Canine senior status varies, too. Small dogs are considered senior citizens of the canine community when they reach 11 years of age. Their medium sized friends become seniors at 10 years of age. Their larger sized colleagues are seniors at 8 years of age.
It is fortunate if a pet is able to die at home in a painless and peaceful state. This is ideal, and is most predictable when using veterinary supervision that includes proper pain control and home euthanasia services.
Finding a dog that is already a perfect fit for your activity level is a key reward for adopting a senior dog. Another bonus to the lower energy level and being done growing up is food requirements. Because older dogs tend to be less active than their puppy counterparts, they need less food.
