The IRS is accepting 2020 tax returns starting February 12, 2021. The Internal Revenue Service says taxpayers should expect limited face-to-face operations, heavy call volume and paper-processing delays as it opens today for tax season 2021, accepting tax returns for tax year 2020.
Though the IRS extended last year’s deadline from April 15 to July 15, your 2020 tax return is due on April 15, 2021. Though the agency won’t begin accepting tax returns until Feb. 12, you can start preparing your taxes now with one of the best tax software companies.
This means the IRS has processed your return and has approved your refund. The IRS is now preparing to send your refund to your bank or directly to you in the mail if you requested a paper check.
The agency is still sending out payments based on information submitted through a non-filers tool or as the result of 2019 returns that are being processed. So, it’s possible your check really is in the mail or will soon be direct deposited into your bank account.
Personal income tax filings Personal income tax returns for 2019 and related filings were due on the extended deadline of June 1, 2020. Self-employed individuals and their spouses’ 2019 tax returns were due June 15, 2020.
IRS Created A Non-Filer Stimulus Check Tool The IRS had originally indicated a deadline of October 15, 2020 to register using the non-filer tool, but eventually extended the deadline to November 21, 2020 to provide more time for individuals to apply.
When stimulus checks were authorized, the requirements for eligibility did not include filing or paying taxes. In other words, if you didn’t file a return in 2018 or in 2019, you were still eligible for a check, but the IRS wouldn’t have known where to find you to pay you your money.
If you don’t receive your refund in 21 days, your tax return might need further review. This may happen if your return was incomplete or incorrect. The IRS may send you instructions through the mail if it needs additional information in order to process your return.

The second stimulus checks are being sent automatically to qualifying people who filed 2019 tax returns, and will be delivered to the bank account (if you received a refund) or mailing address (if you owed money) on that return, not the 2018 return used to determine your first payment.
