Traditional Mohawk religion is mostly Animist. “Much of the religion is based on a primordial conflict between good and evil.” Many Mohawk continue to follow the Longhouse Religion.
The Algonquians ( Mohican ) and Iroquois ( Mohawk ) were traditional competitors and enemies. This was perhaps in response to the formation of the League of the Iroquois. In September 1609 Henry Hudson encountered Mohican villages just below present day Albany, with whom he traded goods for furs.

Mohican (also known as Mahican, not to be confused with Mohegan) is an extinct language of the Eastern Algonquian subgroup of the Algonquian language family, itself a member of the Algic language family. It was spoken in the territory of present-day eastern New York state and Vermont, by the Mohican people.
There are many famous Native American tribes who played a part in the history of the state and whose tribal territories and homelands are located in the present day state of New York. The names of the New York tribes included the Delaware, Erie, Iroquois, Mohawk, Oneida and Seneca.
